Umbraco and AI
Put AI to work inside your Umbraco site.
Umbraco now has its own open-source AI platform: one-click prompts, an editor Copilot, semantic search and AI agents, all with your choice of provider and your own rules. It's powerful, but it can be hard to install and set up properly. That's where we come in.
AI, the Umbraco way
AI that's optional, modular and under your control.
Umbraco doesn't hard-code AI into the CMS. Instead, its open-source Umbraco.AI platform lets you choose your AI provider and model, decide which features to switch on, and set the rules every AI feature must follow. Your data and costs stay in your hands.
One-click Property Prompts
An AI button next to any field. Generate meta descriptions, summaries or alt text in your brand's tone of voice, then review and publish.
Copilot for editors
A chat that understands the page you're editing. Ask for changes in plain language, drop in a brief, or dictate. You accept or reject every edit.
Semantic search
Find existing content by meaning, not just exact keywords, so editors can reuse what's already there.
Profiles per audience
Use different models, creativity settings and instructions for marketing copy, legal text or knowledge base articles.
Speech to text
Editors can dictate into the rich text editor and Copilot instead of typing.
AI beyond the CMS
With Umbraco MCP, AI agents and developer tools such as Claude Code and Cursor can work with your Umbraco content in a structured, governed way.
AI governance, built in
Safe AI needs rules. We set them up.
Umbraco.AI includes the controls security, legal and brand teams ask for. They only protect you once they're configured properly.
Guardrails on the way out
Check every prompt before it leaves your environment and block personal data such as emails, card numbers or National Insurance numbers.
Guardrails on the way back
Block, redact or flag AI output that breaks your rules, such as competitor names or unverified claims.
Logging & audit trail
Every prompt and response is captured with full context, so you can see exactly what the AI did.
Your choice of provider
10 providers are supported, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry and Mistral. Switch any time.
Testing & evaluation
Compare providers, models and prompts side by side on test data before anything reaches your editors.
Humans stay in control
AI actions are explained to the editor, and you can add approval steps so nothing goes live without a person signing it off.

Powerful, but tricky to set up
Why AI in Umbraco is harder than it looks.
Installing the packages is the easy part. Getting AI working safely, affordably and in your brand's voice takes experience.
- Version requirements: the official Umbraco AI packages need Umbraco 17 or 18. Older sites need an upgrade or a different plugin.
- Choosing a provider and model: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and others all differ in cost, speed, quality and where your data is processed.
- API keys and secrets: these must be stored securely, never in source code, with spending limits set at the provider.
- Profiles, contexts and brand voice: without them, AI output is generic and off-brand.
- Guardrails: rules for personal data, claims and competitors must be written and tested.
- Permissions: deciding which editors and user groups can use which AI features.
- MCP and agents: these need secure, least-privilege API users and OAuth, or you risk giving an AI agent too much access.
