Windows → Linux hosting migration

Move Umbraco off Windows. Save up to 40%.

Running Umbraco on Windows Server and IIS means paying for Windows licences and bigger servers. We move your site to Linux with .NET 10 and nginx, so it runs faster, leaner and cheaper, with no change for your editors.

Where the savings come from

Same Umbraco. Smaller bill.

Modern Umbraco runs on .NET 10, which is fully cross-platform. Your site doesn't need Windows any more, so you don't need to pay for it.

No Windows Server licences

Linux has no OS licence fee. Drop Windows Server licensing costs, and the CALs and SPLA charges that come with it.

Smaller, cheaper servers

.NET 10 on Linux behind nginx is lean. Many sites run comfortably on a smaller server than they needed under Windows and IIS.

Cheaper hosting plans

Linux plans on Azure App Service, AWS and most VPS providers are typically priced below their Windows equivalents.

Faster under load

nginx serves static files and handles TLS efficiently, while the Kestrel web server runs your Umbraco site. You get quick pages and low overhead.

Container-ready

Small Linux Docker images make it easy to run Umbraco on Kubernetes, Azure Container Apps or any container host.

Optional: drop SQL Server too

For the right site, moving the database to SQLite at the same time removes SQL Server licence or managed database fees as well.

Choosing your setup

Two ways to host Umbraco. We'll help you pick.

There's no single right answer. It depends on your budget, your team and how busy your site is.

The simplest option

Umbraco on Windows with IIS

The most straightforward way to host Umbraco. IIS is familiar to most .NET teams, it's widely documented, and many hosts offer it ready to go.

  • Simple, well-trodden setup
  • Point-and-click management in IIS Manager
  • Windows Server licence costs
  • Usually needs a larger, pricier server

Is SQLite right for your site?

SQLite works well for low-to-medium traffic sites. It handles many reads at once but only one write at a time, so it gets slow with lots of editors working together or with frequent form submissions writing to the database.

Good fit
  • Brochure and marketing sites
  • A small team of editors
  • A single web server
  • Low-to-medium traffic
Choose SQL Server instead
  • Many editors working at the same time
  • Frequent form submissions or member sign-ups
  • Load-balanced or multi-server hosting
  • High or spiky traffic

Both work on Windows and Linux. We'll recommend the right database for your site as part of your quote.

What we handle

A complete migration, not just a copy.

Moving off Windows touches more than the server. We take care of every detail so nothing breaks on the way.

  • Compatibility audit of your Umbraco version, packages and custom code
  • Umbraco 7 or 8 on .NET Framework? We upgrade you to a modern version first, in the same quote
  • IIS rewrite rules and web.config settings converted to nginx config and appsettings
  • Case-sensitive file paths, media and views fixed for Linux
  • Windows-only code (System.Drawing, registry, Windows auth, event log) replaced
  • nginx, Kestrel and systemd (or Docker) set up, with free TLS certificates
  • Security hardening: firewall, least-privilege service account, security headers, locked-down backoffice
  • Keep SQL Server / Azure SQL, or move to SQLite for extra savings
  • Staging site for sign-off, then cut-over with minimal downtime and a rollback plan
